Horoscopes are drawn based on person’s date, time, and place of birth. It has 12 houses. And each horoscope is further divided in 16 sub-houses or vargas to have in-depth analysis. Predictions are also based on various factors including the present period and subperiod and on what is known as gochara – the current movement of various grahas.

Once horoscope is analyzed, japam, homam, danam are prescribed to propitiate the grahas responsible and therefore improve chances of success in the objectives set by us. Sometimes Parayana, Abhishekam, Mruthyunjaya Japam etc are also recommended. So, like a prescription of a doctor, the list of services may be more than one. It takes some time varying between a day to few days for the services to be completed. As said before, the services are done on behalf of the native by a purohit. The basic deeds, a person needs to observe during the period of services being performed by purohit, are:

  1. Ensure that the period of services cultural norms of vedic dharma are maintained
  2. One day before start of the services, get punyaha vachanam done and sprinkle holy water or if not feasible sprinkle ganga jal entire house.
  3. Every day of the services we need to wake up early and complete the routines. If the native is bed-ridden but is conscious, then sprinkle ganga jal three times on head after routines
  4. Pray your favorite God as per your daily prayers. If you normally do not do a prayer routine, pray God after lighting lamp – preferably by the gruhini of the house – with three or two wicks and ghee or gingelly oil, show agarbathi dhoop and naivedyam – the basics. If the native is not able to do these due to the health condition, depute someone to do this.
  5. To the best of your ability, keep a positive mindset
  6. Keep your favorite God in mind always
  7. Take only sathwik food and drinks
  8. Again, at sunset, perform deep, dhoop, naivedyam after bath
  9. Maintain brahmacharya

The number of japam for each graha varies as per the standard Mahadasa of the graha. The number of japam performed is 1,000 per each year of mahadasa as shown below: Depending on need abhishek, tharpana, homa, dan, parayan etc are also prescribed.
