Rudra Abhishekam is purported to be the pinnacle of all Pujas and rituals. The benefits of Abhishekam are stated to be immense. No text or discussion or pravachanam goes without lauding the benefits of Rudra Abhishekam for overall benefit of human beings and the world at large – especially when it is done with Rudra Homam or Chandi Homam and Rudra Parayana or for that matter with Maha Mruthyunjaya Homam, Japam or Parayana for health.
Rudra Abhishekam consists of three major parts:
The word Nyasa in Sanskit means belong or being kept. Various parts of the body of the benefactor are first energized by inviting respective Devathas with manthras – like inviting Brahma into the source, Vishnu in feet, Hara in hands etc.
Nyasam is of two types Laghu Naysam and Maha Nyasam. First is short form of the later one. Either for Eka Rudram (one time chanting of Rudram) or Ekadasa Rudram (eleven times chanting of Rudram) Laghu Naysam or Maha Nyasam is performed. It is preferred that Maha Nyasam is performed but it is very elaborate. By performing Laghu Nyasam or Maha Nyasam the entire Body is repeatedly energized with various Devathas and Dikpalakas etc, then chant Shiva Sankalpam saying it is Lord Shiva’s will that so and so is done. It is also called Dasanga or Shodashanga Roudreekaranam. When it is done one can feel vibrations within the body.
Shiva Abhsiheka Priyah – so goes saying – Lord Shiva likes Abhishekam
Abhishekam is done on a Panchayathan – consists of five Devathas – Ganapathi, Surya, Devi and Vishnu and Lord Shiva as Linga rupam or on 365 Parthiva Lingams made of black thick soil which are immersed after abhishekam.
Namakam and Chamakam
The Rudram chanting with Abhishekam consists of two parts – Namakam and Chamakam. Namakam is to ensure that Lord Shiva who is all-pervading the Universe and within us, is first cooled with eleven Anuvakas – parts of Namakam – representing ekadasa rudras. Then Chamakam (also has eleven anuvakas) starts requesting Lord to give us/Universe various benefits. One time chanting of Namakam + chamakam is called Eka Rudram and eleven times chanting – eleven Anuvakas of Namakam plus one Anuvaka each of chamakam is called Ekadasa Rudram.
Performing Ekadasa Rudram is supposed to give anything that the benefactor needs – especially during Kartheek Purnima and Maha Shivarathri Day. Or even Masa Shivarathri Day every month or whenever the benefactor needs something special to be accomplished.
Abhsihekam done with various materials is supposed to give specific benefits. It is done with kalasaradhana water, Ganga jal, Cow Milk, Curds from Cow Milk, Ghee from Cow Curds, Honey, Cane Sugar, Coconut water, Kharjur juice, grape juice, many fruit juices, water with vibhuthi, turmeric water, Kumkum water, Sugandh water, water with flowers etc.
Rudra Abhishekam is normally followed by Purusha Suktham and Durga or Sri Suktham and Shiva Ashtothra Puja.
